All Things Essential

As a result of civil warfare and poor government incentives, children in Sudan struggle to obtain quality education. Furthermore, the consequences of extreme poverty and inadequate income have people prioritizing labour-intensive jobs such as farming, as oppose to fulfilling their education. However, despite all of these obstacles, children like Mary Waitu—a young girl attending a charity funded school [BRAC]—are determined to complete their education to the highest standard for the purpose of aiding her “brothers and sisters” who have trouble helping themselves. It was this sanguine attitude that we wanted to highlight in our piece.

The tarot cards—known for seeking knowledge of the future—display qualities of an individual that are essential for learning. This aims to reflect the precious traits and hope for the future that children like Mary retain. We chose existing tarot cards with relevant properties shown at the bottom banner, whereas the top banner displays the meaning of the card. For example, The Hermit—‘the introspective’—signifies guidance and looking for answers within.
