Ribs

When researching on children in South Sudan, I came across numerous articles and pictures of young children who were severely malnourished, not realising the gravity and widespreadness of the issue. I read news stories of families who struggle to get even just one meal a day.

It was heartbreaking.

This is why, in my piece, I wanted to illustrate the uncomfortable and devastating nature of a child who is malnourished. I hope that when people look at this piece, they will feel as disturbed as I am, as these issues are often swept under the rug—we should not be comfortable with children starving.

In our community, it is very hard to imagine going through these kind of hardships. During my research, I found myself reflecting on my own privilege to have 3 meals a day and access to food whenever I am hungry. I have access to all my needs and a fantastic education, which so many children in South Sudan lack. I chose to focus on such a dark, controversial subject matter because I wanted to cast a spotlight on what we, as people with privilege, oftentimes find difficult to look at.
